Hello everyone and Happy New Year!!!! We at evoke hope that you have all had a beautiful and relaxing change of year. So I think we still had a couple of topics to discuss for our resolution list! The last one we covered as a potential hair resolution was washing and how and why we should try to minimize the amount of washes we do in a week.
Today we are back with yet another topic to discuss, a touchy one I might add... Blowdrying. I for one can say that I have a multitude of guests who insist on drying their hair every single day. For the record I DO NOT recommend or indorse that in ANY WAY. The last thing your hair shaft needs is to be pulled and stretched every single day. Most of you are unaware that the entire point of blowdrying with a brush is to stretch the hair shaft out and create a "smoother" more "polished" finished. The problem is, in order to achieve that desired look you must elongate and therefore damage the hairs integrity. We do this by pulling on the cortex layer with our brush and changing the hairs elasticity. There are only so many times that we can stretch out and elastic until it gets that one little dry spot and just snaps!
Other options include, using a clever google search (evokehair on Youtube! ) to find great tutorial videos that will give you one more day without that shampoo and mandatory blow out. Or working with the currently very stylish braids that are being fashioned all over the place. Both are great ways to still look trendy and professional without putting your hair through the ringer. Or we will see you in a couple of months for a very expensive moisturizing treatment and some pricey take home solutions.... The choice is yours baby!
So as everyone has noticed by now it`s getting really chilly out there! I cannot believe how fast the weather has changed. In all fairness though we can`t complain, we really only started to feel bone chilling cold come in this week; and considering that we are in late November that isn`t too bad. One thing is for sure though; that we are starting to use our scarves, hats and mittens again. When these three essential components to a Canadian winter come out they don`t leave until May, so lets get used to wearing them. When the weather gets a bit colder I notice a shift in my clientele also ( they will often stray from saying "lets keep it longer so I can tie it up" and start to say " lets take it up a bit so it fits under my hats"). I completely understand the shift, who wants to put a hat on and stay warm only to find that all the work they did styling in the morning is now pasted to their foreheads! My recommendation is simple... Take It Up A Bit. When your in next to see your stylist of choice consult on a similar style that may be more hat and scarf friendly. You may find that you don`t even need to change the overall style much at all, and may be able to just bring it up a touch. OR for some of you this may be the ideal time to try something a little different, a time to try that slightly shorter cut that you have wanted for a while but could not quite work up the nerve. Why not give that look a try now? I mean what`s the worst that could happen? At least you will have the next 6 months to grow it back out!
Hey Folks! Hope you loved little Mariah`s Tutorial video yesterday! I thought it was hilarious, and super cute. Considering that she is only like 4 years old she did an absolutely amazing job of those pigtails! Okay so Margherita, I can say that no I do not carry this particular product however I may need to start if you are feeling like it is the perfect product for your little ones hair! Funny enough I do carry quite a bit of the Tigi Bed Head line just not the one product you are asking about! Anyway lets get to some options here because I would love nothing more than to make sure you get what you need. I can go ahead and special order that product from my manufacturer and have it in by early next week if you are in the area, I can also ship it to you if you are not. However I should be honest in saying that quite a few drug stores in the Toronto area have started carrying the Tigi brand and may carry that exact product. Alternatively I may just look into carrying it from now on any way, so having said that thanks for the tip! Anyway let me know when and if you would like that ordered, it would truly be our pleasure.
Hi Everyone!! So, the idea behind Saturday Night Lights, Camera, Askin is to answer peoples questions on hair in video form. Okay, is it just me or is this the hottest weather we have ever seen in Toronto? I cannot believe this! I will say though that this is NOT a complaint. I will take heat and humidity over -30 ANY day of the week. Alright so today we have a question that either pertains to you now or will at some point, and seeing as how I turn 30 in a little over a month I am already there!

I LOVE IT! I will tell you this, I have successfully converted three clients in the last month! These are guests that used to colour their hair with us and that I have convinced that going grey is a better idea! This is crazy for a business owner! I mean for as long as they keep their insecurity toward their hair colour I will continue to profit. However, I have NEVER been that kind of business owner so why start now? Anyway I feel that there is an air of sophistication that women have when they attain the confidence to go grey. It really is a matter of how you feel when you look at yourself, some feel proud and others are just dying to rewind the clock. The difference may also lie in your haircut, It seems to me that one of the reasons women give up and go back to colouring is that they don`t change the WHOLE look. When you make the decision to go grey you will need an edgier cut or more fashionable one anyway to make you feel sexy and trendy. I believe that most women can look fantastic grey as long as they stay current and trendy with their hair cuts. Volume! Today we`ve got a question regarding volume. Sandy in Milton asked
"I find it absolutely impossible to find a product that will help me get volume that lasts! Every time I go to the salon I purchase a "NEW" volumizing product that works for about fifteen minutes until my hair flops over and dies! What is there that you can recommend me? Thanks"
Okay the first thing to consider here is the shape of your haircut Sally, and to be honest I also would really need to take a look at your texture to give you a real assessment. Now having said that, I do feel like I can give you some advice that seems to be a general rule when talking about volume. The first thing I would recommend is to avoid putting conditioner ANYWHERE near your scalp. Conditioner will often weigh the hair shafts down enough to stop you from getting any volume at all. Another thing I would recommend is that if you are round brushing your hair at all, you should look into maybe stepping down one brush size. This will allow you to create more bend and establish more wave, hence creating more volume. One last thing... DUST IT! I absolutely swear by this product! (I know, I know, you have A LOT of products) But maybe you just need the right kind. This product is a miracle! It is a talc powder that creates extra grit right at the root area, thus allowing for better support of your lift right at the root! That will make it very very difficult for hair to fall after styling.

I don`t know how many of you have long hair and CANNOT get it to stay up in a pony! I mean I hear about it all the time! Or maybe you just have a tough time blowdrying and finding a clip that will actually hold when you're sectioning? Well, there is help!
There are phenomenal clips on the market now that I use every day and swear by; they are called Gator clips. These things are AMAZING. I have been able to hold a tonne (literally) of hair out of my way as I blow out one section before moving on to the next. In the past it would take a stylist at least two clips at a time to hold the hair of a woman with long, thick, flowy locks, but not any more! These things are phenomenal! Seriously!
The way they work is that there are hinges in the front and in the back, the one in the back controls the clips opening and closing function. The Hinge in the front however is the real prize! This hinge makes it possible for the clip to create like an elbow effect and therefore hold more hair in place in the middle space. One arm drops down and the other bends as you stuff more hair in the clip! So you would imagine that if you have a lot of hair this is the right clip considering it just keeps wanting more and more of your hair!
Anyway they are normally sold in packs of three or four and usually go for anywhere between $8 - $15 dollars per pack. I love them and can`t get enough of these things! Check them out at your salon or closest beauty supply house. Quick tip that I hope makes your life easier and helps you get a grip!

First of all Great question Mary and thanks for asking! Yes I would recommend that you look into getting a good thermal protectant product. These products generally come in oil or cream form and are designed to protect the hair shaft from excessive heat application. They are made to be applied on wet hair and used during your rough drying and flat ironing. I will not even touch a guests hair with my iron unless a thermal product has been applied. A great one to use at a fairly good price is Flat Out by KMS and it retails at about $12-$18 dollars a bottle. Hope this helped Mary and thanks for your question!
